Compiling this first annual list, Cambridge Institute measures leadership success in four dimensions: growth, innovation, financial performance, and social enterprise.

High-performing and under 50, these inspiring leaders in their family companies and family foundations demonstrate that what it means to be a great leader is changing fast.

Each leader on the list:

• Is driven by goals of individual achievement, family success, organizational greatness, and sustainability of their community
• Is successful as an innovator, pioneer, risk-taker, and/or regional or global shaper
• Has a following inside and outside his/her family
• Has a track record and is seen as a good bet for the future
• Builds on a legacy of family history and values
• Is respected, has a good reputation, and is a good citizen
• Has a distinctive, interesting, and inspiring story
• Will be interesting to watch over the next decade
