Cambridge Family Enterprise Group
Gabriel Montoya is an advisor at Cambridge Advisors to Family Enterprise, a highly specialized international advisory firm serving family enterprises. Alongside Cambridge Institute for Family Enterprise, an education and research institute, both organizations are divisions of Cambridge Family Enterprise Group, a global organization founded in 1989. It is devoted to helping families achieve multigenerational success for their families, enterprises, and financial wealth.
From 1995 until 2015, Mr. Montoya worked in different capacities for the Cisneros Group, a multi-national family-owned business conglomerate. In his last five years at Cisneros, he held the position of chief investment officer and head of the Family Office. In that capacity, Mr. Montoya was tasked with the formation of the Family Office from its inception to a 100+ people organization that supports multiple generations of family members, managing a wide range of multi-million dollar assets classes across different jurisdictions. Mr. Montoya led the implementation efforts to establish all required financial, organizational, legal, tax, administrative and logistics infrastructure. Mr. Montoya, in cooperation with Cambridge Institute for Family Enterprise, was also involved in the development of succession planning and overall family governance.
Before leading the Cisneros Family Office, Mr. Montoya was involved in corporate strategy, working directly with the Chairman and CEO, and spent many years working in M&A transactions, new business development and management of portfolio-company operations, across multiple industries and countries. All this has allowed Mr. Montoya to acquire a deep understanding of the family-owned business dynamics at a large scale.
Recently Mr. Montoya has been involved in more entrepreneurial ventures. He was the co-founder and CEO of Next University, a leading education technology platform with a large presence in Latin America. Mr. Montoya took the company from an incipient start-up all the way to a successful exit in less than three years. Recently, Mr. Montoya has been involved with another technology start-up in the financial technology space, seeking to provide access to financial investment products to underserved markets in the US and Latin America.
These recent experiences, combined with his previous family-owned business involvement and understanding of family office dynamics, give Mr. Montoya a unique and very pragmatic perspective regarding entrepreneurship and business innovation within the family business and the many factors that play a role in the success of these ventures.
Mr. Montoya has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Miami Science Museum (Frost Science), and also on the Board of Trustees of the Miami Science Barge. Mr. Montoya is currently a member of the Investment Advisory Committee of the Perez Art Museum of Miami (PAMM) and serves as Bboard member of the St. Philip’s Episcopal School in Coral Gables, FL.
Mr. Montoya earned his MBA from the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administracion (IESA) in Caracas, Venezuela, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Systems Engineering from Universidad Metropolitana, also in Caracas, Venezuela.
